Bid made for crucial government funding sea defence and environment projects on Hayling Island
A bid for funding is being made for sea defences and environment projects which will help to protect the area from coastal erosion.
Havant Borough Council has approved plans to bid for Government funding to support four major projects to reduce the risk of coastal flooding as well as create a new habitat.
The four projects are identified as priority areas in the council’s adopted Coastal Management Strategies’ short-term action plans. They include:
- Eastoke Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Scheme
- Selsmore & Mengham Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Scheme
- Northney Farm flood risk and habitat creation scheme
- Conigar and Warblington flood risk and habitat creation scheme.
These initiatives will focus on safeguarding properties and critical infrastructure while delivering legally required habitat creation and environmental enhancements across the borough. The projects represent a proactive step toward protecting the community and improving local ecosystems for the future.
Each are recognised as an important part of the necessary adaptation required to respond to the changing climate of Havant Borough.
Councillor Grainne Rason, cabinet lead for climate emergency, environment and water quality said: “We are committed to delivering the council’s strategic priorities by exploring ways to reduce coastal flooding risks and restore habitats threatened by climate change. These projects are important initiatives and opportunities for Havant.”
The bidding process is scheduled to commence shortly, with project appraisals expected to span several years. This comprehensive evaluation will enable the council to apply for capital funding to construct or implement the preferred solutions.
