Work begins next week to dismantle a temporary footbridge for the sea defence works in Hilsea

Work will begin next week to dismantle a temporary footbridge which was created for the ongoing sea defence works in Hilsea.

The scaffold temporary bridge in Peronne Road will be closed for dismantling from Monday, January 19, with the work taking up to three weeks. Diversions will be in place, with the normal Peronne Road footbridge inaccessible during this time.

Once the structure is removed the permanent footbridge over the M27 will remain open for the remainder of the work with a manned level crossing which will be closed for a few minutes at a time should any site traffic need to cross it.

The project to create new sea defences in the area has seen the creation of a new raised embankment, as well as new footpaths and improved pedestrian access.

The second temporary bridge near London Road at the Portsbridge roundabout car park will be closed for dismantling from March 9 2026.

The footpath along the car park will be reopened at this time, offering a shorter route, though occasional temporary closures may still be required for slipway work in the new year.
