MV Carmel cargo coaster removed from Portsmouth's Tipner Lake after becoming iconic piece of city's history

A former cargo coaster is being scrapped after being a regular fixture in the area since 2022

The wreckage of a former cargo coaster - known for its ‘Loose Lips Sink Ships’ graffiti - has been removed from the area next to the M275 in Portsmouth and is being scrapped.

The MV Carmel has been a regular fixture in Tipner Lake after the abandoned former 1970s general cargo vessel broke free from its moorings at the former Pounds Scrapyard during Storm Eunice in February 2022 when the floating crane HLV Canute failed and was grounded.

It had been seen in the water close to the motorway since then, and has been targeted by graffiti artists.

But it has now been floated, moved and is in the process of being scrapped.
