CCTV cameras installed to catch fly-tippers in Portsmouth
CCTV cameras have been put up to catch fly-tippers in Portsmouth
CCTV cameras have been installed to catch fly-tippers who are plaguing a residential areas of Portsmouth.
The city council has 14 cameras in and around Buckingham Green in Buckland in order to clamp down on fly-tippers who are dumping rubbish either on the street or misusing bin stores as a way of getting rid of waste.
The council says the move comes after local residents complained about rubbish being dumped.

Cllr Darren Sanders, cabinet member for housing and tackling homelessness, said: "As a social housing landlord, we have listened to Portsmouth Homes residents who told us that fly tipping had become a real concern in the area. We are pleased to be taking positive action to address the issue.
"Residents have welcomed the installation of these cameras and are pleased to see the council taking their concerns seriously. We are committed to keeping our neighbourhoods clean, safe and welcoming places to live."
The council approved a new standardised system of fines for fly-tippers this summer. As of last month, small-scale domestic fly tipping, such as one to three bin bags or a single bulky item including a mattress or chest of drawers, could result in a £400 fine.

This rises to £600 for medium scale incidents and £800 for large scale domestic fly-tipping, including white goods or multiple bulky items. Significant fly tipping, defined as 10 or more bin bags or an equivalent volume of waste, would attract a £1,000 fine.
The council says it hopes that the new CCTV cameras will help deter people from fly tipping and gather evidence if needed to support enforcement action.
Between January and August last year, 80.8 tonnes of fly-tipped waste was collected – down from 106.1 tonnes in the same period in 2024. From January to August 2025, 258 fixed penalty notices were issued for littering and fly-tipping.
The council is also encouraging residents to use the My Portsmouth app to anonymously report issues such as fly tipping, abandoned vehicles and drainage problems. The app also provides information on bulky waste collections and bin collection days.
Large items can be collected through the council's bulky waste service, while other materials can be taken to the Portsmouth Recycling Centre or disposed of using the council's waste and recycling services.
