Water quality warning issued in Lee-on-the-Solent after bacteria found - dozens of homes affected

Roughly 70 properties have been impacted by the issue

Dangerous bacteria has been found in the Lee-on-the-Solent water supply - with dozens of homes being affected.

Residents in around 70 properties are being urged to boil their water after the problem was discovered during routine checks on Sunday (October 18). Portsmouth Water said a routine quality test from a fire hydrant in Martin Close found there was a “presence of bacteria”.

People living in Martin Close, Magpie Lane, Chaffinch Way and Bullfinch Court, have been advised to boil all of their water before consuming it. This should be done for cooking, brushing your teeth, drinking, hand washing dishes or giving to pets.

Portsmouth Water issued a social media statement over the weekend. It said: “Providing safe drinking water to you is our highest priority. This is a precautionary measure while we run further water quality tests.

“We understand that boiling water is an inconvenience, so our team is in the area delivering bottled water to all affected customers. If you do not live in Martin Close, Bullfinch Court, Magpie Lane or Chaffinch Way in Lee-on-the-Solent, your water supply is not affected.”

Alternative water supplies have been put on the junction of Martin Close and Magpie Lane. Residents have been advised to use these in moderation.

Portsmouth Water added: “We will ensure bottled water is available until sampling results have come back clear, and we have confirmed that the water is safe to drink.”

A spokesperson for the company confirmed today (October 19) that around 70 properties are affected by the issue. They said residents should continue to boil water before use, with further tests to be carried out today.

“As providing safe drinking water is our priority, we have taken this precautionary measure while we fully investigate and run further water quality tests,” they said. “Additional water samples taken yesterday have been incubated overnight for analysis later today. We will provide more information as soon as possible and would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding."
