The videos will help people master the basics of saving water.

Households are being urged to check for hidden leaks at home as Portsmouth Water launches a weekly campaign to help residents save water and avoid unexpected bills.

The company's new Find it Fix it Friday campaign will share practical tips every Friday until Christmas, showing customers how to spot and deal with common leaks around the home and garden.

The videos will cover problems including leaking toilets, dripping taps, outdoor taps and stop taps.

Portsmouth Water repaired more than 1,000 leaks across its network during summer 2026 and said it was on track to achieve its highest ever leak repair rate. But the company says around 38 per cent of the leaks it identifies occur on customers' own pipes and plumbing, meaning householders also have a role to play in reducing water waste.

The campaign follows findings from the company's smart meter programme, which suggested around one in five households had a continuous flow of water, indicating a possible leak. On average, these leaks were wasting around 215 litres of water a day, equivalent to about five bathtubs.

Leaking toilets are among the biggest culprits because they can waste large amounts of water without making any obvious noise or showing visible signs of a problem.

Bob Taylor, chief executive of Portsmouth Water, said: “Reducing leakage is one of our top priorities. We're investing heavily to find and repair leaks on our network, and our teams have worked incredibly hard this year to increase the number of leaks we're fixing.

“But leakage isn't just a challenge for water companies. Around 38 per cent of the leaks we identify are on customers' own pipework, so we all have a part to play.

“The good news is that many of the most common leaks can be spotted early and fixed quickly. That's what Find it Fix it Friday is all about.”

The campaign forms part of the company's wider water efficiency programme, which aims to help customers use water wisely and protect supplies for future generations.

Portsmouth Water said checking for leaks could also help customers with smart meters avoid inflated or unexpected bills, as they pay for the water they use rather than a flat charge.

New videos will be published every Friday until Christmas on the company's website and social media channels.
