Lee-on-the-Solent grassland fire destroys section of wildlife habitat at Alver Valley Country Park as crews stop the spread to historic village
Firefighters from across the region tackle the blaze
A large area of grassland has been destroyed near Lee-on-the-Solent as fire crews battled to prevent the blaze spreading to a nearby historical village.
The fire started at around 6pm on Sunday, July 19 at Alver Valley Country Park with crews from Gosport, Fareham, Waterlooville and Havant in attendance. The blaze covered a 500 metre by 300 metre area with firefighters concerned about it spreading to a nearby historic village made up of thatch properties.

While the fire was stopped with one person receiving treatment for smoke inhalation, it destroyed a large section of grassland utilised by local wildlife.
A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters worked hard to prevent the fire spreading to a nearby historical village made up on thatch properties. Using Land Rovers, jets, beaters and knapsack pumps, firefighters surrounded the blaze involving a 500m by 300m area.
“Firefighters left the scene at around 9pm, with one crew returning this morning to conduct a reinspection of the area, checking for remaining hotspots.

“Sadly, these fires leave lasting damage to the countryside and local wildlife. Firefighters found two slow worms amongst the charred grass, and came across a deer enjoying what is left of their habitat.”
