'Dramatic' documentary to show Royal Navy warship track Russian submarine 'at risk of exploding' - when, times
An access-all-areas documentary series showcasing the world of the Royal Navy is relaunching.
Channel 5’s Warship: Life in the Royal Navy returned to TV screens for a second series on April 1. The first episode, aired at 8pm, showcases HMS Iron Duke’s response to a surfaced Russian submarine which was at risk of exploding in the English Channel. Viewers can catch up on Channel 5’s website.

The Duke-class Type 23 frigate monitored the Kilo-class boat Novorossiysk after it was spotted in the English Channel ”limping” and in a “broken” state. Co-host Kate Humble, who joins former Royal Marine JJ Chalmers, stepped aboard a Royal Navy warship for the first time and got caught up in “one of the most dangerous experiences of her career”.
An episode synopsis provided by Channel 5 said: “Kate joins the crew as they set off on an important mission protecting British shores. On board for 2 weeks, Kate gets a taste of what life is like for its 200 strong crew – before events take a dramatic turn.
“Just days into Kate’s visit, the ship is ordered to intercept a Russian submarine heading towards British waters, amid reports that the submarine has a mechanical fault and is at risk of exploding. With amazing access to the entire operation, Kate gets to witness a British warship scramble to intercept one of Vladimir Putin’s deadly submarines.
“But as the ship heads towards its target, Storm Amy begins to batter the coast of the UK, and the entire mission is thrown into jeopardy. With incredible access inside the entire sensitive and dangerous military operation, Kate gets to witness a British warship at sea, and her crew track down the Russians and follow them through the English Channel.”

What else will be shown in the series?
Following on from the first episode, viewers will be shown behind the scene footage of the submarine base at Faslane in Scotland. Mr Chalmers goes through rigorous drills to reveal what it takes to become a Royal Marines commando. Other highlights include looking back on the historical events that kept Britain fighting during World War II, and a moving reunion with personnel who served in Afghanistan.
Viewers were previously given exclusive access to HMS Prince of Wales in a 90-minute special last week. Footage captured the Royal Navy flagship during one of the dangerous parts of Operation Highmast - sailing through the Red Sea.
