Residents 'disgusted' as woman in shades leaves dog poo outside elderly man's front gate

Dog poo left in street amid increasing anger

A woman in shades was captured on doorbell footage allowing her dog to poo right outside an elderly man’s house - leaving locals “disgusted”.

Residents in Sheffield Road, Fratton, are becoming “increasingly frustrated” by dog mess being left in the street.

A video of the incident on May 14 was posted on Facebook showing a small black dog poo as two women stop to talk. A female, wearing sunglasses, then looks back down the street past the mess before carrying on in the other direction - having opted not to pick up her dog’s excrement.

The granddaughter of the man whose house is where the incident happened told The News: “Video footage shows two women appearing to leave dog mess behind while walking past my elderly grandad’s house.

“This was left right outside his front gate, which is upsetting and unhygienic, especially for elderly residents and children walking in the area.

“My poor elderly grandad was trying to put the bins out later on in the evening, and that’s when he realised. It made it extremely inconvenient for him.

“This seems to be a wider problem on Sheffield Road, and residents are becoming increasingly frustrated.”

The Facebook post, which was accompanied by pictures of the woman and dog as well as the video, said: “Please be a responsible dog owner and clean up after your dog. Don’t just leave it for everyone else to step in right outside the front gate.”

Locals responding to the post said they were “disgusted” and that such incidents tarnish all dog owners. One person wrote: “It’s totally disgusting, I’m a dog owner and it makes me mad when I see it scattered all over the footpaths and just as bad poo bags dropped right next to poo bins.”

Another fumed: “The likes of her give other good dog owners a bad name.”

A third person added: “She knows full well that her dog is doing its business, that’s why she looks behind her before walking away to see if anyone has seen her, too daft to realise there are so many doorbell cameras now that she’s been caught.”

Paul Cattermer, who appeared in The News in 2021 after catching a woman on Ring Doorbell dumping a bag of excrement on the street in Eastney, also commented on the thread.

He said of his capture five years ago: “I sent their pictures to The News. They ended up in the paper and the council also fined them. They never care until they are caught.”

COUNCIL POSITION

Portsmouth City Council says on its website: “Dog fouling on pavements and fields causes problems. It sticks to shoes and clothes and can make people very sick.

“A bug in dog poo called ‘toxocara canis’ can even cause blindness. That’s why it’s important to clean up after dogs every time.”

Under current regulations, dog owners are required to clean up after their pets immediately in all public spaces. Failing to do so can result in an instant £100 fixed penalty notice, escalating to a court-issued fine of up to £1,000.

The council advice adds: “If you notice consistent dog fouling in a specific area, you can help the Safe, Clean and Tidy team by filing a report detailing the time, location, and description of the owner.”

To report offenders go to Portsmouth City Council Dog Fouling Form or contact the helpdesk at 023 9283 4092.
