Here’s where a new CCTV camera has been deployed on a busy Portsmouth roundabout following public demand.

As reported, police said in “response to increasing reports from residents”, a deployable CCTV camera provided by Portsmouth City Council was installed on the roundabout by Lakeside and King George V Playing Fields on April 29.

The force said the camera had been installed to stamp out “dangerous” motorbike riding in the area and was not intended to target “lawful riders”.

A police statement previously said: “This has been put in place to help address ongoing issues with motorcycle anti‑social behaviour and dangerous riding, particularly during the evenings. As the weather improves, this behaviour tends to increase and is consistently raised as one of the biggest concerns by our community.

“To be clear, this is not about targeting sensible, lawful riders. The intention is to focus on the small minority who ride at excessive speeds or in a dangerous manner, putting themselves, other road users, and pedestrians at risk.”

The camera will assist police in identifying riders committing road traffic offences and can support enforcement action and prosecutions where appropriate.

However, no action has been taken yet. “As yet, no footage has been requested by the police,” a council spokesperson said.

They added: “I can confirm a new rapid deployment camera has been installed on Western Road following a request from the police to assist with the issues around anti-social behaviour.”

Police did not say whether they had used any footage to take action yet. The force previously added: “We ask all riders to ride safely, responsibly, and within the law, and to be considerate of everyone who uses our roads and public spaces. Thank you for continuing to report issues and helping us keep Cosham safe.”

Readers of The News, responding to the new measure, gave their verdict. One said it was “excellent news” with another person saying: “That roundabout has always been a nightmare for the last 40 years at least.”

A third local added: “There's more dangerous things going on than people who can't drive.”
