The incident involved a silver VW Polo and a white Yamaha YZF with the rider of the motorcycle rushed to hospital before dying from his injuries.

Two males, a 17-year-old and a 29-year-old from Southampton, who were in the VW Polo, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving.

The 17-year-old male has since been released from custody and will face no further action in relation to this offence. The 29-year-old man has been released under investigation whilst “enquiries continue”, police previously said.

Tributes have been left on a fence by the junction of Northam Road and Union Road by the bridge. Flowers, pictures and messages have been left by friends who are struggling to come to terms with their loss.

One message, written on a bouquet of flowers, said: “I am going to miss you so much, man.

“I hope you know wherever you are now that I will always be thinking about you.”

Another friend said: “I’m honestly struggling to put into words what you meant to everyone. From when I met you to through to college you were so funny and made my day.

“My thoughts are with your friends as losing one of my best friends is devastating.”

A third message read: “You will forever be missed. You were an amusing friend and I will forever remember the times we spent together. Thank you for always being there when I needed you. I wish I could have said goodbye.”

Another card, along with flowers, said: “You are my best friend, I always looked forward to seeing you every day.

“I always knew I could rely on you, you were always there if I needed help with my bike, or for a road trip, or to get food. I miss you so much.

“Whenever we were riding you were always right behind me (or miles in front). You are so funny and so kind and so clever.

“I can’t imagine my life without you in it. I don’t want to believe you’re actually gone. When we were together, I was the happiest I’ve ever been. “I love you so much.”

Police are continuing to appeal to the public for information. A spokesperson previously said: “We would like to thank motorists for their patience as the Northam Bridge was closed for several hours before it could be reopened.

“We would like to speak to any witnesses and in particular anyone with relevant dash cam footage of the incident or the moments leading up to it.

“If you have any information, please call 101 quoting reference 44260192933.”
