Drink driver arrested waiting in the queue for the Isle of Wight ferry after collision in Portsmouth

Driver said she couldn't be arrested because her dog was ‘vicious towards men’

A driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after being involved in a collision in Portsmouth.

The crash occurred just before 11pm on Sunday, July 19 with someone at the scene raising concerns to the police that one of the drivers involved was intoxicated. The driver had said she was going to catch the ferry to the Isle of Wight and police located her in the queue waiting to board.

Despite ‘several failed’ breathalyser attempts where the driver was either not blowing or pretending to blow, a successful attempt found that they were over the limit.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said: “The driver appeared confused, stating that she had not drunk anything that day and that her last drink had been two days earlier. Officers were also told that she could not be arrested because the dog was too vicious towards men and was a trained attack dog.

“The driver was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and taken to custody, where she then provided the required two evidential samples, which once again exceeded the legal limit, with the lower reading of 120µg/100ml being entered as evidence.

“Don't drink and drive. You will get caught, you will lose your licence, and if you cause injury to someone, there is a good chance you will go to prison.”

The dog was taken to a kennels until its owner was released from custody.
