'Widespread failures' found at Queens Parade Kitchen in Gosport as it receives a 0 food hygiene rating

Takeaway shop gets zero rating with inspectors finding it ‘cluttered and dirty’

A food hygiene report has highlighted “widespread failures” at a Gosport takeaway with handwash basins not in regular use and staff's fingers “stained and dirty”.

Inspectors visited Queens Parade Kitchen on 165a Privett Road on Thursday, August 20 where they described the condition of the premises as “unacceptable”. The eatery was labelled as “ cluttered and dirty” throughout with pictures taken by the inspector showing a mouldy chopping board and poor cleanliness.

The takeaway which serves fish and chips and Chinese food was handed a zero out of five rating.

In the letter to Queens Parade Kitchen, the inspector wrote: “The condition of the premises was unacceptable. There were widespread failures in food hygiene practices and a significant failure to comply with food safety requirements. The structure of the premises also requires substantial improvement, particularly in relation to cleaning and repairs.

“You were unable to demonstrate that you had received appropriate food hygiene training. In addition, there was no documented food safety management system in place and no supporting documentation to evidence the food safety activities being carried out at the premises.”

There were numerous issues flagged including the need for cleaning throughout with door handles, sinks, toilet, deep fat fryer, and saladette visibly dirty.

The report stated: “The wash hand basin did not appear to be in regular use, and their fingers were stained and dirty.”

The space between the the wok range and the fryer was described as “filthy” with a build up of food debris “approximately eight inches tall”. While the sides of the deep fat fryer were “thick with grease” and had not been cleaned for “some time”.

It was also noted that “no regular sanitiser use was evident” with only an old and dirty bottle produced when asked.

The report stated: “Dirty utensils were present throughout the premises, including scourers, scrubbing brushes, a washing-up bottle, potato peeler and chopsticks.”

Inspectors found the microwave was “dirty inside and out” while “all cloths observed” were also unclean. Extraction fans and filters were “heavily contaminated” with grease and kitchen roll had been put in the gully to catch grease creating a potential fire hazard.

Regarding food storage, a dirty food container was found directly on top of cooked rice and the freezer was said to be disorganised and contained uncovered raw meat. Separate chopping boards were not used for raw meat and cooked food and one chopping board was found to be mouldy with a lot of food debris underneath.

When visiting eateries, inspectors judge the establishments in three areas; hygienic food handling; cleanliness and condition of facilities and building; and management of food safety. In all three areas Queens Parade Kitchen were rated as ‘urgent improvement necessary’.

Queens Parade Kitchen were given 21-days to appeal the rating before it was published. The rating can be found at https://ratings.food.gov.uk/business/627475/queens-parade-kitchen.
