Brothers Kebab House in Gosport has 'disappointing' food inspection re-visit with rating of one issued
Kebab house gets new rating following re-visit
A kebab house in Gosport has been given a food hygiene rating of one after the eatery requested a re-visit.
Brothers at 79 High Street were visited by inspectors on August 17 at their request after a previous visit had flagged issues with its food safety paperwork. However the new visit was described as “disappointing” by the inspector with new issues highlighted.
In the letter to Brothers, the inspector wrote: “This was a rescore request visit and it was disappointing that even though you had completed your food safety paperwork there were other hazards that weren’t being controlled which has impacted your rating.”
Inspectors found a large amount of raw meat on the side being cut up when they arrived. With “a lot of flies” about a black bin bag had been used to cover the meat which was deemed inadequate. It was emphasised that food needed to protected against flies as they could land on raw meat and then on to ready-to-eat food and “transmit bacteria”.

While the visit took place when Brothers was not open to the public, it was found the chip holder unit was dirty and looked like it had not been cleaned since trade the night before. Two knives were also found next to the unit which were also unclean.
Other issues were found including the use of the wrong chopping boards for raw meat. Yellow boards, which are for cooked meat, were used instead of red and the green boards were directly underneath where the raw meat was being prepared. There was also raw lamb stored above salad items which could lead to cross contamination.
The report also stated that the fridge at the counter area was running at 15 degrees when it should be running at 8 degrees or lower. The inspector stated that if it could not run below that it would need to be replaced and “high risk foods” could not be stored in it.
When visiting eateries, inspectors judge the establishments in three areas; hygienic food handling; cleanliness and condition of facilities and building; and management of food safety. The cleanliness and condition of Brothers was deemed ‘generally satisfactory’ while its hygienic food handling was given ‘improvement necessary’. Its management of food safety was rated as ‘major improvement necessary’.
Brothers were given 21-days to appeal the rating before it was published. The rating can be found at https://ratings.food.gov.uk/business/627633/brothers.
