Fridges break down at Portsmouth supermarket as shoppers 'sickened' by potential food waste
“All this food being wasted - again.”
Fridges have broken down at a Portsmouth supermarket as the heat wave continues to bite.
According to multiple reports, the Tesco store in High Street, Cosham, has been affected by a malfunctioning cooling system, with all fridges powering down.

Shoppers took photographs of food being hurriedly removed from the fridges, before being taken away in giant carrier bags, placed into metal cages.
One eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “The Tesco fridges in Cosham have broken down again. All this food being wasted - again.
“It sickens me that this food is bring thrown away because Tesco isn’t investing in decent fridges. This is now the third time I’ve seen this happen here over the summer.”
Posting on social media, another shopper said: “The worst part it is not knowing where all that food goes. I hope it gets donated to a food bank or something - it would be awful for it to just go to waste.”
Cooling systems in supermarkets across the country have been affected by the heat waves this summer, with many stores suffering similar fates.
Experts say this is because the refridgeration systems are old, and cannot expel the heat quick enough as the sun bears down on it. Many of these systems are designed to operate at a maxmium temperature of 32 degrees Celsius.
Tesco has been contacted by The News for comment.
