Bedhampton care home rated as 'outstanding' by CQC as glowing report highlights personalised care

“Outstanding services are those where people receive truly person-centred support, and that is exactly what we found.”

A care home has been rated outstanding after inspectors found staff provided "truly person-centred support" to residents.

Portsdown View in St Agnes Close, Bedhampton, received the top rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after an inspection which finished in July. The home, run by Connaught Care, provides residential care for older people, including some living with dementia.

The inspection was carried out after concerns were raised about people's safety. But inspectors rated Portsdown View outstanding in three areas - caring, effective and well-led.

It was rated good for safe and responsive care.

Neil Cox, CQC deputy director for adult social care in Hampshire, said: "We know that outstanding services are those where people receive truly person-centred support, and that is exactly what we found at Portsdown View.

"Leaders had created an incredibly positive culture in the home, where staff felt valued and empowered to provide care tailored to people's individual needs and preferences.

"It was clear that staff took time to learn about people's backgrounds, interests and preferences and they shaped care around them, rather than applying generic approaches."

Inspectors were given several examples of the personalised care provided at the home. One resident who loved dogs was comforted by staff using toy dogs while helping them take their medication. Another resident experienced anxiety and found comfort in flowers, so staff encouraged them to spend time in the garden picking them.

The CQC said residents and their relatives repeatedly praised staff for treating them with warmth, respect and genuine personal attention.

In one case, a relative was offered accommodation so they could remain close to their loved one during end-of-life care.

The report highlighted the home's approach to food and nutrition, with the head chef working closely with residents to adapt menus to their individual needs. The CQC said this had helped residents reach a healthy weight and reduced the risks associated with undernutrition.

Inspectors also highlighted a scheme called the "day in the life" initiative, which gives senior leaders the opportunity to work alongside colleagues in care, housekeeping and maintenance for a day.

Mr Cox added: "Everyone at Portsdown View should be proud of this report, which reflects the outstanding care they are providing for people."
