'Discussions remain ongoing' but a health centre in Berewood is no closer to fruition after dispute

Talks between NHS and developer ‘remain ongoing’

Residents of Berewood will have to continue to wait for news of when a health centre will be built in the development.

14 years on from planning permission was granted for over 2,500 homes to built in Berewood, some essential facilities are yet to have been built. At the start of this year it came to light that a dispute had arisen between the NHS and the developer of Berewood, Grainger.

While the NHS expected Grainger to build the doctor’s surgery, Grainger stated they were only obligated to provide the land for it as per the S106 planning document set out in 2012. This was subsequently challenged by the NHS, who stated that was not the type of agreement that the NHS ever had with developers.

Fareham and Waterlooville MP, Suella Braverman called the developments “very concerning” and met with bot parties to discuss the issue.

Discussions have subsequently been ongoing with the relevant parties as resolution is sought to ensure that residents are not left without without a vital local facility which was promised when they moved into the area.

The NHS have confirmed that conversation are continuing around possibilities for the health centre.

A Grainger spokesperson said: “Grainger remains committed to supporting healthcare provision for the Berewood community and continues to make the designated land available to the NHS at no cost, in line with its planning obligations.

“The land has been safeguarded for this purpose for more than 10 years, and we continue to engage positively with both Suella Braverman MP and NHS representatives. Any future health facility will be dependent on the NHS confirming need, funding and delivery arrangements.

“Discussions remain ongoing and, while there is no further update to share at this stage, we remain supportive of efforts to bring healthcare provision forward for local residents.”

Over 1,100 homes have already been built in Berewood with another 1,450 set to be constructed. While a school and park have been built residents have been frustrated at a lack of progress in local shops, a community centre, and the health centre which were promised for the area.
