The free school, part of the Southern Education Trust, has just over 70 pupils between the ages of nine and 16, all of whom have an education, health and care (EHC) plan.

Inspectors noted how attendance markedly improved when students joined and that the school provides ‘an incredibly rich and ambitious personal development programme’.

It adds: “The support provided is highly effective and enables pupils to successfully develop their self-confidence, resilience and self-understanding.”

And this, it states, helps them recognise and moderate their own behaviour.

The report says that new pupils settle in quickly, are well-behaved and learn to value opportunities, such as caring for the school’s pets.

It applauds the phonics lessons in English and adds: “The school successfully lives out its values of togetherness, resilience, enthusiasm and kindness.”

It also describes how the school provides a broad range of opportunities centred around further training and career opportunities, preparing leavers for adulthood.

Headteacher Sally Rogers said: “Wymering is an ‘everybody place’ where everybody matters, kindness is our currency and relationships comes first.

“With these as our foundations, children have grown to be able to see themselves as successful learners, make friendships, understand their emotions, have a strong sense of identity and foster ambition for their futures.

“We are so proud of them and delighted that the amazing staff have been recognised for their hard work, care and commitment.

“We are immensely grateful for the support we have from our families, governors and community partners - everyone has contributed to this inspection.

“The report suggests what our next steps to be and essentially encourages us to continue what we are doing.”

The report also highlighted the excellence of the leaders who it says: “Work effectively with families, the trust and external agencies” - and also support their staff.

The school is situated in Sevenoaks Road in Cosham and as part of the Southern Education Trust works with its other schools to share best practice.
