As part of Portsmouth’s centenary celebrations, Stagecoach South is sponsoring ‘Cumberland Rose’, one of the city’s colourful lion sculptures created by talented local artist Katherine Griffin.

Located at Canoe Lake, Southsea, Cumberland Rose celebrates the beauty, history and character of the area, with a design inspired by Katherine’s childhood memories of Cumberland House, Southsea’s Rose Gardens, the promenade and the natural surroundings of Canoe Lake.

Visitors exploring the lion can enter the competition by scanning the QR code on the statue and completing a short feedback form about local Stagecoach services. One lucky winner will be contacted on 14 September 2026.

Stagecoach South is encouraging residents and visitors to explore the Lion Trail by bus, with services connecting people to the sculptures and attractions across Portsmouth. The Stagecoach service 23 takes visitors directly to Canoe Lake, running frequently throughout the week.

Marc Reddy, Managing Director of Stagecoach South, said: “We’re delighted to be part of Portsmouth’s centenary celebrations and to support the Pride of Portsmouth Lion Trail. Our Cumberland Rose sculpture is a celebration of this fantastic city, its creativity and the communities we’re proud to serve.

“We hope the trail encourages people to get out and explore Portsmouth this summer, with the bus providing a simple and convenient way to discover the lions across the city. We’re also excited to give visitors the chance to win a year of free travel and make even more journeys across the South.”
