Wellington Vale Care Home Turns Blue Monday into Karaoke Fun Day

Waterlooville care home Wellington Vale turned Monday 19 January - officially known as Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year - into a fun, uplifting and memorable day.

The care home, based on Darnel Road, transformed its lift into a karaoke booth, where residents, their families, visitors, and staff members were invited to sing along to a playlist of feel-good favourites. Throughout the day, everyone who stepped into the lift happily joined in, embracing the fun by also wearing wigs, feather boas, flower garlands and sparkly hats.

The event was planned as a follow up to last year’s Blue Monday event at the care home, in which Wellington Vale organised a hugely successful Carnival Day and fancy-dress parade, reinforcing its ethos of fun and positivity for residents and staff.

Helen Cox, Home Admissions Advisor at Wellington Vale said, “Building on last year’s success, I wanted to ensure ‘Blue Monday’ was an annual event for Wellington Vale, and a reminder that we don’t feel ‘Blue’ at our care home! I know how much music and singing means to our residents so I decided that the best way to involve as many people as possible in a singing activity was to have karaoke sessions in our lift. It was the perfect place – so many people have taken part today and it has been amazing to see how much they have all enjoyed it.”

Margaret Day, a 93-year-old resident who sang to Que Sera Sera said, “This was a wonderful idea as I have never sung karaoke before and we must all make the most of every opportunity. I felt very happy especially as I realised, I could sing!”

Pat Pope, aged 88 who is also a resident at Wellington Vale, added, “I sang to Dancing Queen and really enjoyed that as Abba is a family favourite. It was fun. There is no Blue Monday for me!”
