The study by Solitaire Bliss examined the most recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on the top 100 baby girl and baby boy names in England and Wales (2025) and identified the most popular names influenced by autumn.

#1 Poppy – 1,789 baby girls. This name derives its most autumnal significance from its use as an emblem associated with Remembrance Day every November. From a horticultural standpoint, poppy seeds are sown in autumn, as they need the chill weather for a strong bloom the following spring.

#2 Ivy – 1,698 baby girls. Ivy is the last major plant to flower in the British year, blooming from September to November when almost nothing else does, then carrying black berries through autumn and winter. It is the definitive autumn and winter foliage.

#3 Sienna – 1,530 baby girls. Burnt sienna is a true autumnal colour. It is a warm, reddish-brown that is reflected in the landscape, signifying the turning of the seasons. This earthy pigment is the colour that leaves change to in autumn and is also a staple colour for fashion choices at this time of year.

#4 Rowan – 1,398 baby boys. The rowan, or mountain ash, carries scarlet berries from late August through October and is the signature tree of the British autumn hedgerow.

#5 Willow – 1,384 baby girls. Willow trees are among the last to lose the green colour in their leaves, remaining green through the beginnings of autumn. However, once its leaves do turn, instead of the brown or orange across most trees, the leaves turn a vibrant, warm yellow, making willows a standout feature among autumnal foliage.

#6 Oakley – 1,377 baby boys. The name Oakley derives from Old English words meaning oak tree clearing or oak meadow. During autumn, the leaves on oak trees turn an array of hues like amber and brown, and they also produce acorns, which fall in autumn and are a popular symbol of the changing seasons.

#7 Olive – 892 baby girls. Olive green has fast become a definitive autumnal hue for fashion and furnishing choices at the turn of the seasons. Also, the harvesting period for olives typically runs from October to November.

#8 Hazel – 638 baby girls. Hazelnuts ripen from September, with hazelnut and hazelnut flavour commonly used in autumnal recipes. Hazel is also the golden brown of a turning leaf, making the colour synonymous with this time of the year.

#9 Hunter – 595 baby boys. The ‘Hunter’s Moon’ is the full moon that comes the cycle after the ‘Harvest Moon’, usually landing in October, which is a key factor contributing to the seasonal significance of the name.

#10 Scarlett – 496 baby girls. The colour scarlet is a deep, vivid red shade seen among fallen leaves, especially from trees like maple and oak. Also seen in sunsets that fall earlier as the season goes on, deep reds are a favoured colour in seasonal palettes during autumn.

A spokesperson for Solitaire Bliss commented: “For new parents, finding the right name for their child can be tricky, with ideas and inspiration coming from all directions. However, choosing a name that reflects their season of birth is a great way to honour and celebrate the time of year in a whole new way.

"Plus, autumn is clearly a great source of inspiration for thousands of parents. It is interesting to see how many of the autumn names are rooted in nature and the British landscape, from rowan berries to hazel and ivy. It suggests parents are drawing on the natural landscape around them rather than simply picking a colour or a mood."
