The Fernes residents step back in time with nostalgic visit to Dolly’s Vintage Tearooms
Residents from The Fernes Care Home enjoyed a heart-warming trip down memory lane during a recent visit to Dolly’s Vintage Tearooms in Gosport, where an incredible collection of memorabilia helped bring treasured memories of childhood, family life and years gone by flooding back.

The visit proved to be much more than simply a morning out for a cup of tea. From the moment residents arrived, they were surrounded by fascinating items from the past, creating wonderful opportunities for reminiscence, conversation and storytelling.
Owners Alasdair and Tracy gave the group an incredibly warm welcome and took time to share some of the many treasures they have collected over the years. Residents enjoyed dressing up, exploring the displays and discovering items including a photo album dating back to 1934 and beautiful memorabilia celebrating the late Queen.

The displays soon had residents sharing memories of their childhoods, parents, past homes, family traditions and how everyday life has changed over the decades. The morning was filled with laughter and stories, as well as a few happy tears as particularly special memories came flooding back.
Residents also thoroughly enjoyed traditional teacakes and a proper cup of tea while taking in the nostalgic surroundings.
Gemma Woodford, activities lead at The Fernes, said: “It was one of those outings where you could immediately see how much it meant to our residents. Everywhere they looked, something sparked another memory or story. We talked about childhoods, parents, family traditions and how much life has changed.
“There were huge smiles, lots of laughter and even a few happy tears. Reminiscence can be incredibly powerful, and seeing our residents connect with their own life stories through the items around them was really special.
“We can’t thank Alasdair and Tracy enough for the time and kindness they showed our residents. They didn’t simply welcome us into their tearoom - they became part of the experience. Dolly’s was so much more than somewhere to have tea; for our residents, it became a journey back to family, home and some very treasured memories.”
Following the success of the visit, The Fernes is already looking forward to returning to Dolly’s Vintage Tearooms with more residents so they too can experience the nostalgia.
The trip forms part of The Fernes’ varied life enrichment programme, which focuses on providing residents with meaningful experiences, maintaining connections with the local community and creating opportunities to reminisce, socialise and continue making new memories.
