Student short film that explores how a child directs grief of a lost loved one through a pirate fantasy world
Lost at Sea is a Student Film being made by 3rd Year students at the University of Portsmouth.
"We aim to create a compelling story through the imagination of a child who is dealing with the grief of a lost loved one," they said. "We are raising money towards this project to help us bring our vision to life.
"Our film follows Little Jimmy, who imagines himself as a first mate called James to a great Pirate Captain. They train together but one night in a tavern they learn of a terrible sea creature that’s been terrorising the oceans. The next day they head to the docks with the intent to be enlisted into an assault on the sea monster that will end the fighting. After fighting to show their worth, Jimmy's mother suddenly appears in his fantasy, breaking the immersion as she pleads with him to leave.
"Jimmy fights this until the Pirate Captain tells him he can’t go on the voyage with him, after a heartfelt goodbye to the Captain, Jimmy returns to the real world. Him and his mother arrive at a church where a funeral is taking place, we see a Navy officer in a photo outside reading ‘In loving memory’. This Navy officer was the Pirate Captain in Jimmy's imagination, as we learn that the Captain is really Jimmy's father who sadly passed away while on deployment.
"To make this short film possible we need to raise as much money as we can, so any donations are greatly appreciated. We also appreciate all the support and if you wish to follow our journey consider following our Instagram account too!!"
