Rowner carnival 2026: A community comes together again

Rowner Carnival 2026: A Community Comes Together Once Again

On Sunday 26th July 2026, something truly special happened in Rowner. After 14 years without a community carnival, thousands of residents came together to celebrate the return of an event that many thought they would never see again.

The day began with a spectacular parade through the streets of Rowner, being opened by the worshipful mayor of Gosport Cllr Kirsten Bradley led by the magnificent HMS Sultan Super Sentinel Steam Bus, proudly carrying the Rowner Carnival Royal Family: King Steve Darrington, Queen Wendy McIlroy, Prince Lincoln Hill and Princess Lola Bowyer-Stock. Following closely behind, the walking procession was led by Thomas Emery, Chair of the Rowner Renewal Community Events Association (RRCEA), alongside hundreds of participants, performers, community groups and local families, creating an unforgettable sight as they made their way to Grange Junior School as they arrived at the school grounds where the event was being held big noise samba band played the whole procession onto the field with the biggest bang !

As the parade arrived, the carnival officially began, bringing the community together for a day packed with free entertainment, live performances, workshops, inflatables, community games, local organisations, market stalls and activities for all ages. From the opening moments until the very end of the day, the atmosphere was filled with laughter, smiles and a renewed sense of pride in the Rowner community.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the entire event was organised and delivered by a team of just six dedicated volunteers. Five had never organised a large-scale community event before, while one volunteer brought over 15 years of experience in event management. Together, they combined passion, determination and teamwork to overcome every challenge, proving that experience alone doesn’t create great events people who care about their community do.

This wasn’t simply a day of entertainment; it was about restoring a tradition, reconnecting neighbours and proving what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose. Families who had attended the original Rowner Carnivals stood alongside children experiencing one for the very first time, creating memories that will last for years to come.

The Rowner Renewal Community Events Association would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to every volunteer, marshal, performer, stallholder, sponsor, partner organisation and supporter who helped make the day such an incredible success. Your generosity, enthusiasm and belief in our vision made all the difference.

A special thank you also goes to the residents of Rowner. The overwhelming turnout, the kind words, the smiles and the incredible community spirit shown throughout the day reminded us exactly why we worked so hard to bring the carnival back.

We would also like to thank our funding partners and supporters, including Gosport Borough Council, Hampshire Cultural Trust, The players of the national lottery, Rowner Community Trust, Hampshire County Councillors, Pride in Place, together with the many local businesses, community groups and individuals who donated their time, resources and support. Without your belief in this project, the return of Rowner Carnival simply would not have been possible.

Thomas Emery, Chair of the Rowner Renewal Community Events Association and Event Manager, said: “Bringing Rowner Carnival back has been one of the biggest challenges we’ve ever taken on, but also one of the most rewarding. Seeing thousands of people enjoying themselves, neighbours reconnecting, children making memories and hearing so many people say, ‘This is what Rowner needed,’ made every late night and every obstacle worthwhile.

"This carnival belonged to the community. It showed what can be achieved when people come together with a shared vision, and I couldn’t be prouder of every single volunteer, partner and resident who helped make it happen.”

The return of Rowner Carnival marks the beginning of a new chapter for the community. The vision has always been about more than one event it is about rebuilding community spirit, creating opportunities for local people and establishing a lasting tradition that future generations can be proud of.

If this year’s carnival proved anything, it is that Rowner has a community worth celebrating.

This wasn’t just the return of a carnival. It was the return of community spirit.
