Rowers take to the water to carry out annual Langstone Harbour clean up

The Wombles spirit is alive and well in Portsmouth

The rowers at Tudor Sailing Club took to the water over the weekend to carry out their annual Langstone Harbour clean up.

Six gigs rowed around the perimeter of the harbour , ‘wombling ‘ up waste, plastic and debris that continues to contaminate the foreshores .

This year the club was supported by ‘The Final Straw’ charity who provided gloves, litter pickers and collection bags. The Wombles Cup can be awarded for the biggest haul of rubbish, the oldest piece of rubbish or, as is the case this year, the most useful ( and therefore most likely to be recycled) haul. Whilst the rowers are delighted to report that our harbour is looking cleaner than when we first started the competition there was sadly still enough collected to fill a skip!

Our biggest haul came from Farlington Marshes where fly tippers had dumped a carpet, chunks of plastic building material and a vacuum cleaner.

This year’s award went to gig Olive who collected tools that ‘got away’ from the building trade. The club has gained, sunglasses, brushes and an assortment of spades.

It was a great day and we were lucky enough to meet supportive locals who were genuinely interested in our venture.
