Review: Time turned back to the 80s at the Guildhall Square for spectacular 80s concert
Saturday night back again! Same great vibes, big crowd, pleasant early evening sun, a cracking atmosphere with a more of a “night out” feel ahead of Smash Hits: The 80s! The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO), continuing the special Centenary Concert series to celebrate Portsmouth 100, with a 70-plus strong Orchestra conducted by the talented Peter Harrison.

This show was a journey through some of the greatest hits of the 1980s, with the BSO sounding better than ever alongside four guest singers: Emma Kershaw, known for her West End leading roles, session work and forthcoming solo album, Patrick Smyth, accomplished actor, session work, voiceover artist with many TV and stage credits, Oliver Tompsett, specialist in singing and acting, with many stage credits and recording projects, and Katie Birtill, whose varied career spans theatre, music, jazz solo shows and performances with orchestras. What a quartet! They were much at home in the pop extravaganza that followed.
The evening opened with a BSO medley teasing what was to come. Peter then appeared in a splendid bright-red tunic, commenting on the “fantastic outfits out there” before introducing the BSO’s 80s rhythm section.

Then into the music, starting with George Michael’s Faith followed by Heart’s Alone featuring great vocals from Emma. The crowd sang along with gusto then the first tribute, to David Bowie, including Ashes to Ashes and Let’s Dance, the singers were clearly enjoying each other’s company, the audience up and partying, more with each song. The Guildhall was beautifully illuminated throughout the evening with the sweeping colours across its columns making the building look truly spectacular.
The dancing moved into full swing with Dexys Midnight Runners’ Come On Eileen. The square was bouncing, arms were aloft and we were transported back to the halcyon days of disco.
A Blondie medley, including Call Me and Atomic, sounded particularly special with the full force of the BSO behind it. This was followed by a tribute to Bonnie Tyler and a brilliantly heartfelt performance of Total Eclipse of the Heart, beautifully led by Emma. An orchestral section added even more emotion and drama, and the first half finished with Elton John’s I’m Still Standing, which everyone certainly was!
The interval gave everyone the chance to enjoy the Guildhall’s great selection of refreshments before heading back into the 80s party atmosphere. Even though the weather was a little chillier than Friday evening, there was no let-up in the party atmosphere!

Peter made a dazzling return for the second half in a green glitter jacket. The energy was high, with the crowd fully embracing said party atmosphere. I Wanna Dance with Somebody had everyone on their feet, while Vienna, Africa and Sweet Dreams were among personal highlights for many people.
The Pet Shop Boys and Madonna medleys brought even more colour and spectacle, with fabulous costume changes. A special mention must go to the incredible creative and technical teams who brought the entire vision to life. With spectacular SFX: including flames, confetti, video walls and beautifully designed lighting, every element added to the scale and excitement of the show. Guildhall Square is already a very special setting but, illuminated in this way, it looked truly spectacular.
By the final medley, the whole square was still standing or should I say dancing the night away. A spectacular firework display topped off an incredible evening, with the glowing Guildhall standing beautifully against the night sky. It was a joyful, high-energy ending to an unforgettable event.
Both shows were excellent, each creating its own distinctive atmosphere and audience experience. While Friday’s concert had a more reflective feel. Smash Hits: The 80s brought an irresistible party energy to Guildhall Square. The performers, audience and Guildhall itself all helped create a perfect weekend of live music.

As Peter said on Friday, “There is nothing like the sight and sound of a real orchestra.”
Next year? It’s a yes from me!
