Portsmouth Water marks Water Saving Week: Don’t let the good stuff go to waste
This Water Saving Week, Portsmouth Water is supporting customers across Hampshire and West Sussex to reduce their water use and protect precious local water sources.

Through its ‘Don’t let the good stuff go to waste’ campaign, the company is offering simple, practical ways to save water this spring. This includes working in partnership with Save Water Save Money to offer discounted water butts, to collect rainwater for drier days.
The company has also partnered with garden centres across Hampshire and West Sussex, to distribute flyers and share tips on how people can reduce water waste.
For instance, hoses and sprinklers typically use 1,000 litres of water an hour. Simple changes, such as using a watering can and harvesting rainwater can significantly reduce how much water is wasted.
Bob Taylor, Chief Executive Officer for Portsmouth Water, said: “Saving water isn’t just about what happens inside your home - how you care for your garden can also make a real difference, especially this spring. That’s why it’s so important to us to support our customers with practical, easy ways to save water, whether that’s offering discounted water butts or working closely with local garden centres.
“Across Hampshire and Sussex, we’re incredibly lucky to have some of the best chalk water sources in the world, and protecting them is something we can all play a part in. We want to reassure our customers that saving water doesn’t have to mean big or complicated changes. Even small adjustments in how you use water, particularly during the warmer months, can really help and make a lasting difference.”
Portsmouth Water’s water supply comes from the chalk under the South Downs. This chalk aquifer, acts like a large underground reservoir and a natural filter, providing excellent quality water.
Historically, there have been plentiful supplies of high-quality water within the company’s supply area, but this is set to change. While population growth and climate change play a part, the big driver here is the need to leave more water in the environment which will support flows in our local chalk streams.
Water Wise’s Water Saving Week runs from 4- 8 May.
