New group brings babies and care home residents together

A new community initiative launched in Portsmouth by local mums Millie and Lydia is helping bring generations together while supporting emotional wellbeing for both parents and care home residents.

The free group invites parents to volunteer by bringing their babies and young children into care homes for interactive activity sessions with residents. Through singing, play, conversation and shared experiences, the sessions aim to create meaningful connections and moments of joy for everyone involved.

Millie and Lydia, who describe themselves as “just two regular mums with a passion for social connection and emotional wellbeing,” created the group to help tackle loneliness and social isolation often experienced by older adults in care settings.

The initiative has already gained strong community support, with four local care homes now on board and partnering with Connor’s Toy Library, which generously provides toys for each location to support the sessions.

Alongside the benefits for residents, the group also hopes to support postpartum parents by helping build confidence, connection and a renewed sense of purpose during early parenthood.

Babies also benefit through valuable opportunities for social and emotional development as they interact with older generations in a warm and engaging environment.

Organisers say the project is all about creating community, connection and happiness — a true win for residents, parents and babies alike.
