Milton turns out in force for annual community picnic on the green - pictures

A fantastic community event

Families from across Milton flocked to the annual community picnic on the Green at the former St James’ Hospital on Saturday, filling the much‑loved open space with music, laughter and the unmistakable feel of a proper neighbourhood celebration.

Now in its 25th year, the picnic began as a way to mark the Green being saved from development. A generation later, it has grown into one of Milton’s biggest community traditions, supported by more than 75 local businesses and organisations.

This year’s line‑up was one of the most varied yet. Local dance schools, agility dogs, Hero Martial Arts and the ukulele ensemble the Pompey Pluckers kept the crowds entertained, while the Scouts’ climbing wall proved a hit with younger visitors.

St James Church served tea, coffee and homemade cakes to raise funds for their roof repairs, and the Bransbury Park model train group were out in force collecting donations for their new rail track.

The Lord Mayor officially opened the event, welcoming families and thanking the volunteers who make the picnic possible. With more than 60 stalls spread across the Green — and, thanks to the team behind Victorious Festival, even proper onsite toilets — there was plenty to see, sample and enjoy.

A lively dog show, run by local vet Justyn from Vets for Pets, drew a crowd of enthusiastic owners. To mark Portsmouth 100, a special fancy dress competition invited residents to dress as local landmarks or moments from the city’s past century.

Judging duties fell to MPs Amanda Martin and Stephen Morgan, joined by Gemma Barnabas‑Atkin from St James’ Park.

Among the many regulars was the event’s oldest attendee, 96 year old Jill Ashley of Mayles Road. “I come every year and I love it,” she said, enjoying a cup of tea and a Japanese pastry. She had hoped to try the climbing wall but was gently persuaded to remain on solid ground.

As the afternoon wound down, organisers from Milton Neighbourhood Forum reflected on another hugely successful year — one that once again showed how strongly Milton’s community spirit continues to thrive on the Green.
