Local expert to host workshops to improve understanding of hoarding during Hoarding Awareness Week
Workshops will explore the complexity of hoarding behaviour
A specialist Occupational Therapist, based in Hampshire, is hosting two online workshops during Hoarding Awareness Week to help professionals and families better understand hoarding disorder and how to support those affected.

Brigitte Hoare, founder of Red Squirrel OT CIC, has over 20 years’ experience working in adult mental health services and specialises in supporting people with hoarding difficulties.
Her workshops will explore the complexity of hoarding behaviour, focusing on dignity, safety and compassionate support.

Brigitte said: "Hoarding disorder is often misunderstood and heavily stigmatised. People who struggle with hoarding are frequently judged rather than supported. My aim is to help professionals and families understand the behaviour behind hoarding and learn practical ways to offer support."
The workshops will cover:
• Understanding hoarding and its prevalence
• Occupational therapy approaches
• Practical tools and resources
• The importance of safety, dignity and choice
• A lived experience story
This year’s Hoarding Awareness Week campaign in May, is focusing on the development of national guidelines for hoarding support, building on the first ever UK Parliament debate on hoarding disorder.

Brigitte added:" We need consistent, compassionate support across housing, health and community services. Education is a key step in achieving that. Essential element is to take the time to understand the individual story behind the hoarding"
The sessions are open to professionals working in housing, mental health and social care, as well as families supporting someone with hoarding difficulties. Everyone attending will be given certificate of attendance.
Online Workshop dates:
Tuesday 12th May: 9:30am–11:30am
Wednesday 13th May: 6:00pm–8:00pm
