Hayling Care Home has Curling Fun!
Wimborne Care Home on Hayling Island brings the fun of indoor curling to residents. There was plenty of laughter, friendly competition and a little bit of healthy rivalry at Wimborne Care Home recently, as residents enjoyed a lively session of indoor curling.

Indoor curling is a fantastic activity for older people because it combines movement, concentration, social interaction and most importantly fun. Residents can take part at their own pace, making it an inclusive activity that can be adapted to different abilities.
The gentle movements involved in moving the curling ‘stones’ can help encourage hand-eye coordination, balance and upper body movement, while aiming for the target provides an opportunity to practise concentration and spatial awareness.

The benefits however go far beyond the physical.
For residents living with dementia or cognitive changes, activities such that Wimborne ( as a mixed residential and dementia home) provide can provide opportunities to make choices, follow simple instructions, recall familiar skills and experience a sense of achievement. The simple rules and clear visual targets mean curling is easy to understand and enjoy, even for any resident who finds more complex activities challenging.
Most importantly, curling brings people together, residents encourage one another, celebrated successful shots and enjoyed plenty of good-natured banter along the way.
‘Wimborne is a home where we believe activities are about far more than keeping busy. They are opportunities to connect, laugh and challenge, with real feelings of achievement’’ said Zoe Freeman, Senior Activities Lead

General Manager Kelly Brown has said ‘‘Having the ability to play curling in the home is a great initiative, we see residents having fun, being competitive and supportive, physically active and enjoying life. We often clear the room for curling, dancing, performances and concerts. Wimborne is a home of a great many smiles!’
Everyone is a winner when it comes to having fun together. Well done Wimborne!
