From Slimming World to the front of the class: Rachel’s remarkable fitness transformation

Three years later, Rachel has lost an incredible 3st 3.5lb, is the fittest she has ever been – and has achieved something she once never imagined possible: qualifying as a Les Mills Body Combat instructor.

Rachel joined Slimming World after deciding she had had enough of feeling unhappy with her weight and eating habits.

“I just stopped liking what I saw when I looked in the mirror,” she says. “I never felt nice in any of my clothes. I was eating healthy-ish meals but couldn’t stop the binging on bad foods and was out of control with snacking.”

The changes have been about far more than what the scales say. Rachel also recognised that, following the Covid pandemic, she had developed a habit of drinking alcohol every evening with dinner – something she has since successfully left behind.

Today, she says she has found a much healthier balance. She no longer drinks at home and instead enjoys the occasional drink when socialising with friends.

One of the things Rachel values most about Slimming World’s Food Optimising approach is that it can fit around her gluten-free diet, which she follows because she has coeliac disease. Rather than feeling that favourite foods are forbidden, she has learned that everything can be enjoyed in moderation.

Her regular favourites include Cajun dirty rice and Slimming World carbonara, while batch cooking has become an important part of staying on track. By filling the freezer with homemade meals, Rachel always has a nutritious option ready for lunch or dinner.

Perhaps her biggest victory, however, has been changing her relationship with food.

Learning not to turn to chocolate when things were difficult, resisting emotional eating and gaining control over portion sizes have all been major milestones.

And as the weight came off, something else began to happen: Rachel’s fitness improved dramatically.

Exercise had always been part of her life. She was a keen runner and particularly loved Body Combat classes at the gym. For Rachel, the high-energy workouts became much more than exercise – they were a way of letting go of the stresses of the day.

“After a bad day, an hour’s combat class is just what I need to get me to relax,” she says.

As Rachel lost weight, she became fitter, stronger and increasingly confident. Then came an unexpected suggestion from another participant at the gym: why not train to become an instructor herself?

She took the challenge and recently passed her training to become a fully qualified Les Mills Body Combat instructor.

For someone who once struggled to feel comfortable in her own clothes, the prospect of standing at the front of a fitness class is a remarkable transformation.

“I never in a million years thought I could be an instructor standing at the front of a fitness class,” Rachel says. “I am so proud of myself for doing it and now wish I had done it many years ago.”

Rachel is yet to teach her own classes, but that hardly diminishes the achievement. The woman who began her journey wanting to feel better when she looked in the mirror has now reached a point where she could be the person inspiring others to believe in themselves.

And Rachel’s journey isn’t over. Her original target is another 3.5lb away, but she refuses to let that number define her success.

“My health and mental health have massively improved since I have lost weight,” she says. “I feel more confident and it is a real boost when people notice the effort I am putting into myself.”

There is also an important lesson in Rachel’s story: changing your life does not mean giving up on enjoying it.

“You still have to live your life and enjoy every moment,” she says, “but by Food Optimising you can enjoy the best of both worlds.”

For Rachel, Slimming World has provided not simply a route to losing weight, but the confidence to discover what she is capable of. She has become fitter, happier and more confident – and has taken a passion for Body Combat all the way to instructor status.

She also credits her Tuesday night Slimming World group at North End Baptist Church with playing an important part in the journey, describing the friendships she has formed there as “the best” and praising the supportive people around her.

Now Rachel hopes her story can encourage someone else to take that first step.

“If I can inspire one person, then I would consider that a success.”

That may be the most powerful measure of Rachel’s transformation of all. She set out to change the person she saw in the mirror. Along the way, she has become someone who can stand at the front of a room and inspire others to change theirs.
