Denmead care home welcomes spring with lambs

Spring arrived at Denmead Grange Care Home this morning, carried in on wobbly legs and with the softest bleats imaginable. On a bright cool morning 2 lambs from Em’s Farm arrived and brought with them the special delight and excitement that somehow only animals can conjure.

Gambling up the wide Furzley corridor ‘Barney’ and ‘BamBam’ the friendly and tame lambs burst into the spacious lounge where they were greeted with residents thrilled to see them. The lambs confidently trotted in, their wool still fluffy and cloud white, too little to have been outside yet they were happy indoors. For a moment there was silence as residents collectively leaned forward, then one produced a little bleat and the cooing started, hands down to attract these curious little ones.

They were bright eyed visitors, one nuzzled a walking frame, another took interest in the furniture and attempted a bold little hop that drew laughter from the crowd. Staff spoke with delight about the enthusiastic engagement of all. For many residents the lambs stirred memories as fresh as the morning air. Stories bubbled up of childhood farms and springs spent in Hampshire fields. Hands that had once bottle fed lambs decades ago reached out again, feeling the gentle warmth of these 3 week olds.

At 11.30 the bottles came out and the lambs tackled them with vigour to the absolute delight of residents. One resident whispered, ‘it feels like the fields have come to visit us’. Denmead Grange is nestled in the woods so the day to day visitors are more likely to be birds, foxes and deers. Therefore the lambs brought so much more than entertainment; they carried the unmistakable energy of spring - faces lit up and smiles erupted with the playful antics on display.

Residents receiving care in bed or their rooms did not miss out, one to one visits were made and there was sheer joy at seeing little woolly faces poking around the door. Confidence grew and Barney and Bambam were happy to run along, but never strayed far and came back within moments. Seeing them hop and jump along the corridors is an image that certainly brought even greater joy to those lucky enough to witness their frivolity.

For a little while Denmead Grange was filled with the joy of connection of people and animals, memories and laughter, woven together in sunshine. The lambs were gently guided away down the corridor and soft warm spring feelings remained.

General Manager Abbie Johnston said ‘Thanks to our Activities Coordinator Vicky Burgess who organised this morning’s visit. It was a complete hit and one which will be a moment to talk about for quite some time, residents clearly loved these lovely little visitors. A lovely part of our Springtime activities and celebrations.’’
