Dementia comes to the pub; Wimborne care home team and Ferry Boat helps Hayling Island get dementia aware
The Ferry Boat Inn on Hayling has joined forces with Wimborne Care Home to bring a free dementia awareness session designed to help local people feel more informed and confident when interacting and supporting those living with dementia.

All are invited to join from 10.30 – noon, on Wednesday 30th September at Ferry Boat Inn, 1 Mill Lane, Ferry Road, Hayling, PO11 0QG
Wimborne Care Home on Selsmore Road, Hayling is working with The Ferry Boat Inn on Ferry Road, Hayling to offer the local community a vital and supportive Dementia Awareness session. Families, friends, carers and professionals have the opportunity to learn more about dementia with one of the popular sessions being brought out to a new venue.
Hosted at The Ferry Boat the session will help people to better understand dementia, recognise some of the changes a person may experience and importantly discover practical ways to communicate and connect with anyone living with the condition.
The session is being delivered by Nikki Shepherd, Wimborne’s Home Services Advisor who was previously a specialist Dementia Coach and Educator for the NHS. She will share experiences of supporting many hundreds of people living with dementia and their families. Rather than focussing on the medical aspects of dementia the session is designed to look at the individuals and to explore how small changes in communication can make a significant difference to everyday interactions. Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions and share their own experiences.
Kelly Brown, General Manager at Wimborne said; ‘Dementia touches so many families, yet people can often feel unsure about what to say or do when someone they know begins to experience changes. Our aim is to make dementia less frightening and much better understood. By taking these sessions out into the community we hope to give people practical ideas and greater confidence to support friend’s, neighbours and loved ones.’
The Ferry Boat Inn is providing a welcome community setting for the session, reflecting the importance of taking dementia awareness into everyday places where local people meet and naturally socialise.
For Wimborne it is part of its wider commitment to support not only those who live in their homes but also families and the wider community.
This offer of free dementia awareness sessions is open to other local community groups, venues and clubs. Wimborne is also running a series of 4 talks in the home on evenings and weekends, please contact Nikki on 07586 115830 for further information.
