Community rallies behind charity cyclists as they raise more than £2,700 in 137 mile ride

Five determined cyclists received a hero’s welcome at AFC Portchester after completing a gruelling 137 mile charity bike ride across two days in support of the club’s new 3G pitch project.

Trevor Deacon, Louis Avenell, Lewis Deacon, Luke Channer and Bryn Furber took on the incredible challenge on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd May, battling hot weather conditions and long hours in the saddle to raise funds for AFC Portchester CIC’s planned community 3G facility.

The group completed the demanding two-day ride to an emotional reception at the home of AFC Portchester, where members of the local community gathered to cheer them across the finish line. Families, friends, club members and supporters of all ages grouped at the club to celebrate the cyclists’ achievement, creating a fantastic atmosphere that reflected the strong community spirit surrounding the club.

Together, the riders raised an outstanding £2,715, with donations continuing to support a project that will benefit the wider Portchester community for years to come.

Those in attendance spoke of the inspiring scenes at the finish line, with the challenge highlighting not only the dedication of the five riders, but also the togetherness and support that exists within the AFC Portchester community.

The planned 3G pitch facility will sit at the heart of the community, providing a safe and inclusive space where people of all ages and abilities can come together, stay active and feel part of something positive. The development will create more opportunities for youth football, girls’ football, walking football and disability football, helping to expand access to the game across the area.

Working alongside AFC Portchester In the Community CIC, the non-profit project is focused on giving back to the community that has supported the club for more than 50 years.

The successful fundraising effort and the turnout to welcome the cyclists home demonstrated just how much excitement and backing there is for the future of the facility and what it could mean for the local area.
