The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to voluntary groups across the UK, recognising the outstanding work they do in their communities. 6th Gosport (Rowner) Air Scout Group has been part of the local community for over 100 years and has supported hundreds of young people to develop skills for life while making a positive impact on those around them.

During his visit to the awards reception, Dwayne spent time with the young people in the group and the volunteers whose hard work was being recognised.

Lisa Young, Group Lead Volunteer, said: “The 6th Gosport, or #team6th, as we’re known, is so much more than a Scout Group. It’s a team and a community that thrive on creating opportunities for young people to be the best versions of themselves. #team6th are proud to be changing the lives of young people for the better and being presented with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service feels like the icing on the cake of over 20 years of hard work improving and developing the group into a community pillars. We are so proud of all our incredible volunteers.

6th Gosport (Rowner) Air Scout Group supports young people aged 4 to 18 across five sections. This is made possible by a dedicated and growing team of volunteers, currently made up of over 60 adults.

Young people at the group are always ready for adventure, with members recently returning from a camping trip at an international jamboree in Czechia, and plans are underway for a Summer Camp in Scotland, an expedition trip to Brownsea and a mini jamboree for the younger section, celebrating 40 years of Beavers and 5 years of Squirrels.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson, commented:

“Across Hampshire, volunteers quietly transform lives every single day – strengthening communities, lifting spirits and making our county a better place for everyone. Too often, their extraordinary dedication goes unrecognised, so it is a great privilege to celebrate this year’s winners of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service. This award shines a light on their remarkable achievements and, I hope, helps them continue to inspire others to give their time, energy and compassion in service of their communities.

Adventure is for everyone, and the volunteers at 6th Gosport (Rowner) Air Scout Group continue to make it possible for young people across the area. To join an award-winning team, visit www.team6th.org
