Charity quiz raises £550 for children’s cancer charity, Alfie’s Wish

Children's cancer charity, Alfie’s Wish organised a charity quiz which raised £550 last night. Over 70 people joined their mascot ‘Wishy’ at the Sir Joseph Paxton pub, Park Gate and enjoyed an exciting evening, with only half a point separating the top three quiz teams.

Gary Parker hosted the evening and included quiz questions about dreams as Alfie’s Wish helps to make dreams come true for children living with cancer. They often miss out on holidays and memorable experiences due to time spent in hospital and feeling unwell during treatment.

The charity was set up in 2020 in memory of 5-year-old Alfie Butler who died from a brain tumour. Since then, it has helped over 600 families in the south with trips to the zoo, theatre visits and meeting the cast, football matches and meeting the teams and a lot more. Last Christmas, they took 12 families to Lapland UK in Windsor and they would like to help local families again this Christmas.

Founder, Charlotte Butler said, “We are really grateful to Gary Parker for hosting the quiz and to Dave and Vicki Roseby at the Sir Joseph Paxton pub. Everyone had fun and the money raised will mean we can help more families affected by cancer.

Losing our son Alfie was really hard and we know how important it is to make special memories. We help families to make those memories so we go above and beyond, wherever possible, and give them something nice to look forward to when they are going through tough times.”

Gary Parker has hosted charity quizzes for many years and said, “It was a real pleasure to support Alfie’s Wish and I’m really pleased that we raised £550 for them. Knowing that more children across the south and their families can have fun and make memories is a nice thought. I want to thank everyone who took part in the quiz – it was really exciting at the end as the winning team, Ronnie’s Revamped, won by just half a point!”

Alfie’s Wish helps children in hospitals across the south, including Southampton University Hospital, Queen Alexandra Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Royal Marsden Hospital and University College London.

This Easter, Charlotte and the charity will be giving Easter gift bags containing family activities to children in the Piam Brown Ward at Southampton Hospital. You can support Alfie’s Wish with a range of challenges and there are lots of fundraising ideas on their website www.alfieswish.org.uk
