Care home residents benefit from mindfulness sessions

At Denmead Grange Care Home they ‘find calm in the moment’. Supporting residents wellbeing goes far beyond physical care. The team is embracing the gentle, powerful practice of mindfulness – helping residents find calm, connection and joy in the present moment.

Mindfulness is the practice of focussing the attention on the here and now. It has been shown to reduce anxiety, improve mood and promote a sense of peace. For residents, particularly those living with dementia, these moments of calm can be incredibly meaningful.

At Denmead Grange, mindfulness is woven naturally into daily life. Whether it is a guided breathing session in the lounge, quiet time in the garden listening to the multitude of birds or simply enjoying a cup of tea without distraction, residents are encouraged to slow down and savour each moment.

These small but powerful practices can reduce feelings of stress and agitation, support better sleep and relaxation, encourage positive communication and connection and help residents feel grounded, calm and secure.

For those residents living with dementia mindfulness can be especially beneficial. By focussing on sensory experiences – like the warmth of the sun, the scent of flowers or the rhythm of music, residents can reconnect with feelings of comfort and familiarity even when the specific memories may be affected.

The team at Denmead Grange often incorporate mindfulness into group activities, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Gentle chair based relaxation, sensory sessions and music appreciation all offer opportunities for residents to engage at their own pace

General Manager Abbie Johnston said ‘ Mindfulness doesn’t have o be complicated. It is about creating little pockets of calm throughout the day. We see such a difference in residents when they feel relaxed and present – it brings a sense of contentment and we are a home of happy residents. Our beautiful setting here in the woods, with our lovely gardens mean that families can share moments like a quiet walk or sitting and chatting without the rush. This can strengthen bonds and foster lasting emotional connection. At Denmead Grange we support not just longer lives, but, happier and peaceful ones.’’
