Brushstrokes of inside-out growth: Transformative street art project leaves lasting legacy at King's Academy Brune Park
A pioneering intervention art project at King’s Academy Brune Park has transformed the school’s corridors and culture, yielding an emotional and social impact far more powerful than anyone could have predicted.

Over the past few months, the initiative has seen students working collaboratively in small groups to design and execute vibrant murals across the school site. The hands-on process has fostered a genuine sense of ownership over their learning environment, strengthened peer relationships, and instilled a deep sense of pride and collective achievement.
However, organisers emphasise that the project has never been solely about creating artwork. Alongside the paint and rollers, the core focus has been on building positive relationships and establishing a supportive environment where pupils feel safe expressing themselves.

By utilising street art - a highly contemporary and relatable form of creative expression for young people today - the project has provided students with an innovative platform to communicate, connect, and build self-assurance.
The project has been facilitated by renowned international street artist Mister Samo, whose mural work has taken him across the globe. Reflecting on his time working with the Gosport students, Mister Samo spoke of the profound evolution he witnessed on the school floor:
"Being able to share that experience, knowledge, and creative space with these young people has been a gift," he said. "In a remarkably short period of time, I have witnessed profound changes in many of them, and it has been both a privilege and an honour to be part of their journeys.
"The murals themselves are symbolic. They represent far more than paint on a wall; they reflect who these young people are becoming—creative individuals who are growing in confidence, self-expression, and identity. As a community, we have also seen how this work has helped students become more regulated, focused, and calm within their wider learning."

The ripple effects of the project are being felt across the wider school community. Staff have noted a tangible shift in student engagement, observing that the collaborative, creative focus has directly translated into calmer, more regulated behaviour in standard academic lessons.
For the students involved, the personal breakthroughs have been immense. One student participant shared their moving reflection on the experience:
"I was really nervous and anxious at the beginning, but the process has been really fun to just experiment and create, and now I feel really proud."
What has ultimately emerged from this ongoing initiative is not simply a collection of striking murals decorating the walls of King’s Academy Brune Park, but a permanent, living legacy of connection, belonging, creativity, and personal growth that will inspire the community for years to come.
