'High-performance' powerboat spectacle heads to Gunwharf as teams from across the world face off in the UKOPRA Powerboat championships

Portsmouth based team hoping for home glory

A racing spectacle is taking place in Portsmouth this weekend as powerboat teams from across the world head to Gunwharf for the UKOPRA 2026 Offshore Championships.

Visitors to the outdoor shopping centre will have the chance to see some of the fastest and most powerful offshore racing boats on Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19. Around 30 teams will be competing in four different class sets as they take on an 80-mile circuit in what will be the last races of the season.

It will be a special moment for Portsmouth based team Rush Racing UK which is run by husband and wife team Gary and Abi Godden. They are heading into the competition on top of the Class 3E Championship meaning they could win the title on home waters.

However, the 3E classification has its own south-coast derby on its hand with Southampton based Licence to Thrill chasing Gary and Abi down for the top spot.

“The fleet will showcase an impressive variety of high-performance powerboats, ranging from 21ft racers to machines measuring up to 50ft. Engine power will be just as varied, with boats competing with everything from a single 115 hp engine to an impressive 2,200 hp twin engined race hull.

“For spectators around Gunwharf Quays, the event promises an opportunity to see some of the fastest and most powerful offshore racing boats from across the world at close quarters, with international crews bringing an added dimension to the event.

“With championship points still at stake, the 'Gunwharf Quay Grand Prix' is expected to deliver plenty of noise, speed and excitement when the boats hit the water.”
