SailGP: Thousands of passionate fans pack Southsea seafront to cheer on Team GBR - pictures

Spectators were amazed by the hotly contested racing and musical performances

Day one of SailGP proved to be brilliant for thousands of fans who packed Southsea seafront.

Team GBR - represented by Olympic heroes Hannah Mills OBE and Darren Fletcher MBE - and the other international teams were pushed to their limits in the high winds and choppy conditions.

Portsmouth's tight racecourse provided the perfect showcase for a new group format which saw six winners from six races. The Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team, owned by Sir Ben Ainslie, won the final contest with the raucous crowd cheering them as they crossed the finish line.

In Team GBR’s group B, Sweden’s Artemis team top the pile with 13 points in front of the British contingent with seven points. Group A sees New Zealand’s Black Foils leading with 11 points, just in front of Canada’s North Star team with ten points.

Two more races per group will take place, leading to a final with the top two teams from each group. “Portsmouth is perfectly poised for another unforgettable day of racing,” a SailGP spokesperson said.

Music superstar Jess Glynne serenaded the spectators, with popular singers Craig David scheduled to perform at today’s event. Crowds will continue to flock to Southsea seafront, enjoying the glorious sunshine and tightly-poised racing. This weekend also saw the end of the Clipper endurance race.
