Portsmouth really comes alive each summer when thousands of people flock to the city to enjoy our beautiful coastline and seaside attractions – ideally in glorious sunshine. I’m looking forward to the array of vibrant events celebrating the best of music, food, sport and more in the city from next month, when summer will officially begin.
From Victorious Festival to the spectacular commemorative events for D-Day 80, here are 11 reasons why I can’t wait for summer in Portsmouth.

9. Victorious Festival
Taking place in Southsea on August 23, 24 and 25 the three-day event is one of the biggest and best our city has to offer. The festival features music, comedy, food and drink and children's activities to make sure there is something for everyone. Headliners include Fat Boy Slim, Snow Patrol and Biffy Clyro. 10. Gosport Sunset Festival
The free Gosport Sunset Festival is making a return to Walpole Park, Gosport from August 30 to September 1. It will feature live music, a fun fair, stalls and food and drink. 11. Great South Run
The Great South Run Weekend returns to Portsmouth on October 19 and 20 with thousands of runners taking part in events along Southsea seafront on both days. Details at https://www.greatrun.org/events/great-south-run/ Picture: Keith Woodland (151021-793) Photo: Keith Woodland

12. A trip to the beach
A day out in Portsmouth would be incomplete without a trip to one of Portsmouth’s beaches. Skim a stone, build a sandcastle or simply lie in the sun, weather permitting. Southsea Beach is flanked by Clarence Pier and South Parade Pier, but there are quieter beaches on offer if you delve further along the coastline. Thousands flock here every summer.
