Sea of love: Portsmouth sailors spell out Valentine's Day messages

LOVE is in the air as sailors from the Royal Navy sent out their own quirky Valentine's Day message to their loved ones.

Sailors on Portsmouth-based destroyer HMS Daring have come together to form a giant red love heart on the flight deck of their ship.

The £1bn air defence vessel and her crew is currently on deployment thousands of miles in the Middle East

Other pictures, released by the navy today, also show two of the service’s elite ordnance disposal divers from HMS Cattistock making heart signs with their hands during training in the chilly waters around Portsmouth Naval Base.

One stunning image was captured by a navy photographer while on deployment in Norway.

It shows them painting a love heart using the light of a torch – with the glow of the Northern Lights in the background.

Other images come from a patrol ship HMS Mersey – which returned to Portsmouth on Friday after a 13-month mission – showing love hearts from rope.
