Scarefest at Alton Towers is back and with a new addition to prompt even more frights

If your idea of spending a lovely crisp October night screaming your head off then, as usual, Scarefest at Alton Towers is the place to go.

The rides bring enough yells of their own but throw in the scare mazes and the park is wall-to-wall screams.

This year, there’s a new addition to the mazes; the frighteningly eerie and brilliantly staged Final Exhibit that will leave you breathless as you run through the dimly lit corridors chased by The Archivists, “a silent workforce of hypnotised servants who carry out The Curator’s sinister orders and search for new additions to his collection.”

As the explanation around the exhibit states, “Guests will soon discover that the collection is not made up of objects alone. Those who fail to escape are transformed into living exhibits, trapped within the archive forever.”

Having been through the some of the mazes at the park before, this one ranks incredibly highly in terms of genuine jump scares and very well-acted story-telling from The Archivists.

Of course, Final Exhibit doesn’t dilute the frights of the more established mazes. The Compound maintains that pit-of-your-stomach fear of something that doesn’t appear to be beyond the realms of reality, where guests “descend into the unsettling depths of a secretive scientific facility and become unwilling participants in a twisted experiment.”

The Edge of the Forest, “invites those brave enough to venture beneath its eerie canopy. Guests are warned by lost souls to be aware of the Leshwall - a sinister spirit said to infiltrate the minds of all who cross its path.” I don’t know if my mind was quite infiltrated but it was at this point that I wondered if this was all a good idea and I might be content with a nice sit down for a bit.

And my favourite, if you can call it that - judged only by my wife’s laughter after seeing me run for my life out the door - Altonville Mine Tours: Tiny’s Revenge is also back, taking you through an abandoned mine, chased by gas-mask wearing former ‘workers’ and various other neglected freaks whose sole purpose is apparently to make you cry. My daughter’s friend wailing, ‘no, don’t make me go down there!’ a case in point.

If your little thrillseekers are looking for a more gentle Scarefest experience, visitors knock on doors along Spooky Avenue and into the Witchy Woods in Trick O' Treat Town . And there’s also Amigos in the Afterlife, ”set in a world of colour and festivity, families will be guided by cheerful spirits on a quest to find their way back to the land of the living.”

Of course, it’s not all horror... you can break up your day by getting on some of Europe’s top rides including TH13TEEN, Nemesis Reborn, The Smiler, Oblivion, Wicker Man and the rest. And if you get hungry, the quirkiness of seeing your burger and chips spin down the track from high above at the Rollercoaster Restaurant will add another minor thrill.

It’s scary, it’s exciting and all of the family will love it, whatever their age.

Scarefest runs until November 1, 2026
