Malpractice axed by ITV after series 2 as ‘decision is made’ on future

Malpractice is not going to return for a third series on ITV ❌📺

  • Malpractice has been axed by ITV.
  • The show aired series 2 earlier this year.
  • But there are no plans for a third season.

A prime time drama has been axed by ITV after its second series. Malpractice returned in the spring after two years away with a brand new case.

In series two, the medical drama followed the MIU’s investigation into psychiatrist Dr James Ford after the death of one of his patients. Dr Norma Callahan (Helen Behan) and Dr George Adjei (Jordan Kouamé) returned for the new set of episodes.

However, ITV has now made a decision on the show’s future - and it is not good news for fans. Here’s all you need to know:

First premiering back in 2023, Malpractice returned in the spring for a second batch of episodes. Each season is stand alone and tackles a different case of potential medical malpractice.

Speaking earlier this year, creator Grace Ofori-Attah told of her hopes for a potential third season. Telling RadioTimes: “I've always got ideas. If ITV wants to give me some more series, then I will definitely come up with some stories for them.

"I would love to see Norma and George just come back time and time again and become a real staple of UK TV, I would really love that."

Unfortunately, ITV has now made the decision to pull the plug on Malpractice. It will not return for a third series on the broadcaster.

A spokesperson for ITV told The Sun: "We’re very proud of the two series of Malpractice and grateful to everyone who supported the show. Commissioning decisions involve many factors and while there are no plans for a third series, we’d like to extend our thanks to Grace Ofori-Attah and the team at World Productions for producing two brilliant series."

Who was in the cast of Malpractice season 2?

For the second season, Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé returned as the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU) are once again called in to investigate a doctor under fire. The season also starred Tom Hughes as Dr James Ford, alongside Selin Hizli, Zoë Telford, Rick Warden, and Ace Bhatti.

When on-call Psychiatric Registrar Dr James Ford (Tom Hughes) is caught between an anxious new mother’s postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a psychotic patient, no one could predict the devastating outcome.

Dr Norma Callahan (Helen Behan) and Dr George Adjei (Jordan Kouamé) of the Medical Investigation Unit are called in to investigate. His personal life is messy, and his colleagues may find him arrogant, but Dr Ford appears committed to his vulnerable patients. As the team digs further into the events of that night, what appears to be a series of poor choices by one doctor spreads beyond the psychiatric unit to a hospital seemingly at war with itself.

ITV’s hit drama Trigger Point recently returned for series three. See who is in the cast of the season.
