Michael Jackson's Thriller creates history and makes him the first artist with Top 10 hits in six decades

Interest in MJ continues after the release of the trailer for his biopic also broke records recently.

  • Michael Jackson continues to make history, even after his death.
  • The King of Pop is now the first artist to have Top 10 hits in six different decades.
  • The feat was achieved as interest in the pop star continues following the release of the trailer for his upcoming biopic.

After appearing once again in the album charts over the Halloween season, Michael Jackson has continued to make history in recent weeks, not long after the trailer for an upcoming biopic also caused a stir online.

Thriller re-entered the Top 10 on the Billboard 100 over the spooky season, rising sharply from its previous position at number 32. This success in 2025 means the King of Pop has now secured a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in six distinct decades, beginning with the 1970s and extending through the 2020s.

This latest milestone is of massive historical importance as Jackson officially surpasses the late Andy Williams, who, until he died in 2012, held the record for Top 10 placements across five decades. Williams’ longevity was often credited to the seasonal success of his holiday song, It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, much like Thriller benefits from its annual Halloween resurgence.

Over his incredible career, Jackson has amassed 30 Top 10 hits, 13 of which reached No. 1. Until this week, his last Top 10 appearance was a feature on Drake's Don't Matter to Me in 2018.

The resurgence of Thriller is directly tied to its massive performance on digital platforms, demonstrating the song's continued appeal to modern audiences; the track garnered 14 million streams during the latest tracking week, according to Luminate data, driving its leap into the upper tier of the chart.

While its recent placement is significant, Thriller's highest peak on the Hot 100 was No. 4 when it was first released in 1982. The fact that a song originally released over four decades ago can generate such contemporary streaming numbers is a powerful testament to Jackson's timeless musical legacy - but could also indicate a new cultural interest in the singer.

The feat comes after the recent release of the trailer for his highly anticipated biopic, Michael. The film's first look instantly broke records, amassing an astonishing 116.2 million views worldwide in its first 24 hours.

That made it the most-viewed trailer ever for a music biopic, surpassing the previous record held by the trailer for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (96.1 million views), and setting a new record for Lionsgate's biggest trailer debut.
