EastEnders actor will return to The Kings Theatre for Portsmouth Panto later this year

Barry from EastEnders will be back on stage in Southsea later this year.

An EastEnders actor who has delighted theatregoers this month will be returning to Portsmouth later this year.

This month, Shaun Williamson has been performing as both the Toymaker and Lord Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at The Kings Theatre in Southsea. Williamson, known for his comedic timing and larger-than-life stage presence, appeared in EastEnders 734 times over the course of 31 years.

So iconic was his role of Barry Evans that he even played the part of ‘Barry from EastEnders’ in the BBC sitcom Extras, which ran from 2005 to 2007.

Now, Portsmouth Theatres has announced that Williamson will return to the stage at the end of this year - in the Portsmouth panto at the same theatre. It comes after the actor was also named as Portsmouth Theatres’ patron, the first since the merger.

Jack Edwards, artistic director and deputy CEO of Portsmouth Theatres, said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Shaun back to The Kings Theatre stage in such an iconic role, and to continue our relationship with him as our patron. He represents everything we value in live theatre: warmth, humour, and a deep connection with our audiences.

“On a more personal level I am so chuffed to have Shaun back on stage with me for panto, aside from being a great performer, he is a valuable and kind company member. He is absolutely part of the family now.”

Williamson added: “It’s a real honour to be returning to Portsmouth for panto and to also serve as patron of Portsmouth Theatres. I love Portsmouth and especially being part of the Portsmouth Theatres shows.

“These venues are incredibly special, and I’m proud to be part of their future as well as their festive traditions.”

This year’s panto at The Kings Theatre will be Jack and the Beanstalk, with further casting and ticket information to be announced in due course.
