Download 2026 Curveball: 5 massive acts that could be Kam Haq's surprise guests
Just when you thought, after the first announcement, there was no more speculation in store, Download reveals a “curveball” in store for 2026.
- Download Festival has promised a “curveball” act will be announced ahead of the 2026 event.
- That’s led to speculation who could be that act that “people have been after for a while.”
- We take a look at some of the candidates, including who we think could - and should - fit the Main Arena bill next year.
With over 90 acts confirmed so far for Download Festival’s 23rd edition next year, you would think the immediate speculation may cease - but not after comments made after the announcement by one of the festival’s organisers.
The new buzz, aside from who might be playing what stage, is currently all about the "massive curveball act" that Download Festival booker Kam Haq confirmed he is aggressively trying to secure for a slot on the Main Arena.
But Haq didn't just tease a surprise; he set a very high bar for the booking, noting it would be "something that people have been after for a while" and have "asked for it online over and over," despite being completely unexpected for a major rock festival.
While there is some speculation of a Vengaboys-style performance akin to this year’s festival, it doesn’t seem like a booking for the late-night tent, but instead a high-profile statement intended for the largest stage at Donington.
The question, then, is which massive, non-traditional act has the profile, the fan demand, and the audacity to command the Main Arena alongside announced headliners like Limp Bizkit, Guns N' Roses, and Linkin Park?
Here are five massive acts that could be Kam Haq's surprise guests, fulfilling the ultimate Download curveball.
Who could be Download 2026’s ‘curveball’ act?

Scooter
No other name on the rumour mill promises a bigger, more chaotic reaction than German Eurodance legends Scooter. While they fit the "guilty pleasure" nostalgia brief, Download’s booker, Kam Haq, has explicitly said this curveball is for the Main Arena, elevating the possibility beyond the late-night District X tent.
Scooter’s high-octane energy, massive light show, and frontman H.P. Baxxter’s iconic shouts ("How much is the fish?!") would instantly turn the Donington field into the biggest rave in metal history. Booking them isn't about fitting a genre; it's about sheer spectacle and delivering a viral moment that transcends genre boundaries and proves the festival is willing to shock its purist audience into submission—and a frantic jump-style frenzy.
They also seem to be a popular choice on the Download Festival subreddit, though there is that caveat they “might” not be a Main Arena band yet.
Nickelback

Yes - Nickelback.
They fit the "asked for it online over and over" comment, often appearing in ironic fan requests, yet they are undisputed arena-filling rock stars with a catalog of anthems (’How You Remind Me,’ ‘Photograph’). Their booking would be the curveball because it’s the most divisive option—it would outrage metal purists while guaranteeing a colossal, massive-sing-along crowd for the general rock fan.
Crucially, the band themselves have previously stated they would be "up for" playing or even headlining Download, adding a layer of plausibility. Plus, Nickelback aren’t that bad, right?
Billie Eilish

Of all the rumoured acts, Billie Eilish would be the most audacious cultural statement Download could make.
While categorised as a global pop star, Eilish’s music—dark, moody, and often underpinned by heavy electronic and alternative rock aesthetics—speaks directly to the rebellious spirit of the rock audience. Her stage presence is immense, and her booking would be an unequivocal declaration of the festival's ambition to be a cultural giant, not just a genre box.
Eilish commands massive Main Stage crowds globally (Glastonbury, Coachella) and her sound has enough dark intensity to resonate with the younger, post-emo fans that Download is actively courting.
Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots (TØP) provides the perfect compromise between commercial size and energy, making them a very plausible Main Arena curveball.
The duo’s signature sound—a theatrical mash-up of rap, indie-pop, rock, and electro—makes them difficult to place, yet they routinely sell out arenas and headline major festivals worldwide. Their music contains clear connections to the rap-rock and nu-metal scenes, giving them a legitimate foothold with the Limp Bizkit crowd.
They are a high-energy, guaranteed spectacle that would command a huge, positive crowd reaction and fulfil the need for a massive, modern act without the risk of a hostile crowd response.
Wu-Tang Clan

My honest prediction and one that would definitely fit Download Festival, while not alienating a large portion of the crowd.
If the "massive curveball" must be an act that fans have "asked for over and over," then Wu-Tang Clan is arguably the most logical non-rock choice. Hip-hop and metal share a common root in counter-culture and anti-establishment spirit, and Wu-Tang is hip-hop royalty, a foundational legacy act whose status transcends genre.
The festival is starting to shape up a little more like a Family Values Tour next year, and with that tour bringing together rap and rock - and the possibility of Method Man guesting with Limp Bizkit over the weekend - it starts to become plausible, right?
The Clan's high-energy, revolving-door stage presence would translate perfectly to the Main Arena and with the group often on their "final" world tours, offering them the UK's biggest rock stage is an irresistible offer for both the band and the festival—a historic, one-time crossover event for a huge, demanding audience.
