"Family fun is guaranteed" at this fabulous Eurocamp site in Brittany which was simply perfect

Family fun in fabulous France you say? Well if you take a trip to Brittany’s simply brilliant La Grande Metairie Carnac Eurocamp site then this is guaranteed.

La Grande Metairie is just a couple of hours away from St Malo port, which is so easy to reach from Portsmouth, and offers just about everything you could possibly need for that perfect family break away - including the ability to bring your (probably overpacked) car for the trip!

If you are one of those people who still thinks that Eurocamp is some sort of retro camp site then you really are missing out on a little gem of an accommodation option and you need to pay attention!

I have been a Eurocamp convert for a while now after fabulous stays in other locations, but La Grande Metairie was a new one for me. And its proximity to the coast and a number of lovely-looking French towns and cities certainly made it very appealing.

Its woodland location very much hides what is on the other side of those trees - more family fun and activities than you could possibly pack into one holiday. But I was intrigued right away as approached the entrance to the site and passed a strange higgledy piggledy assortment of stones which you instantly make a mental note to visit (more on that later!).

As expected, the site has a bucketful of fantastic facilities. Of course it has a large fantastic outdoor pool and slides which gets busy, but not too busy, and isn't freezing cold, as well as smaller covered pool and indoor pool next to it for a bit of variety and space away from the crowds.

There is also a park, lots sports facilities you can use - the table tennis tables were a particular favourite of ours - and a little shady farm area which was a perfect place from getting away from the sunshine if you need to as well as to entertain any tiny humans you bring with you.

If you want a kids club then they have these in the school holidays as well as a games room, and there is also an abundance of other organised activities if you like to 'join in', if not though there are plenty just on the site to entertain yourselves!

When my children were little, finding things to entertain them was never hard. But now I have teenagers and they are a different ball game altogether, awkwardly too old for 'kiddy things' and too young for 'adult things'.

But La Grande Metairie is onto a real winner here for us as one of the many activities it offered on site was a mini tree top adventure as well as a zip line adventure and tree top trampolines. And even better - you do not need to book, you can turn up and pay.

It has the right level of difficulty, being challenging enough for bigger kids and adults, but not too tough for smaller children. And it is run by the same people who run a much larger nearby full on treetop adventure site called Forêt Adrénaline which we also had to visit during our holiday.

Now, I've done Go Ape before. But I have to say that Forêt Adrénaline is perfect for all the family as it has multiple courses for you to try for all ages and heights in completely different way. This also included a fabulous course of zipline after zipline which I found to be the most fun.

My 15-year-old son took great delight in dragging me on the toughest one where, after struggling up the cargo net to get to the top, I wondered what on earth I was thinking in agreeing to it. He also loved the fact I 'got stuck' and needed help from the fantastic staff to get down at the end. So at least I amused him.

But Brittany isn’t all about being busy if you don’t want to be, and there is the chance for a change of pace at the other nearby fantastic places to visit.

As I previously mentioned, our accommodation site was next to a historic site called the Alignements de Kermario - a Neolithic megalithic site, featuring 1,029 large menhirs (historic stones) arranged in 10 rows stretching over 1,300 meters. Busloads of tourists were coming for miles to visit this - and all we had to do was to walk out of the gate to soak up this quirky bit of history.

La Grande Metairie is also a stone's throw away from the fantastic little town centre of Carnac which not only had all the facilities we needed for a self catering holiday, but was also a great little place to have a walk around and soak up the atmosphere.

And you can even get the bus there right from the holiday park. In the historic town centre we visited the fantastic boulangerie and patisserie for essential supplies, stopped off at a bar for a drink and an ice-cream, had a look around the local rather beautiful church and of course had a little wander around the French shops which attracted tourists far and wide.

We also headed to the coastline just south of Carnac town centre which boasts the most amazing long and wide beach areas perfect for all sorts of activities and fun - with the opportunity to hire paddle boats and water sports equipment if the mood takes you. Or simply lap up the waves and go for a paddle and walk along the promenade which is what we did to just relax.

Just off the main beach (Grande plage de Carnac) is a real hive of activity with restaurants, bars, shops, ice cream stalls and even a cinema which was an area we visited more than once, with my daughter falling in love with the crepes on offer and my partner the abundance of fantastic oysters and mussels in the fabulous eateries.

If the mood takes you, there is also the fantastic picture-perfect medieval town of Vannes which is only a half hour drive away, with all of its chocolate box appeal for anyone looking to really throw themselves into a bit of French history.

That being said, the great thing about staying at La Grande Metairie is that if you really don't want to venture too far, you don't have to.

It has a great bar on site for the evening, a restaurant with some fantastic food which we really enjoyed, or - if you are anything like us - there is plenty of space on the terrace to relax after a swim whilst enjoying your own BBQ having stocked up at the local Super Marché.

And of course the fresh bread and pastries each morning from the on-site shop were a must!

And I'm so grateful that our three-bedroom Comfort XL accommodation had air conditioning which was a lifesaver after an unexpected mini heatwave brought temperatures up to 34 degrees for a couple of days.

As always, this Eurocamp site excelled in everything it has to offer with plenty of options to be fun and active, or just take some time out for yourselves as a family.

Needless to say I think we will be back, if only to quell my daughter's crepe obsession.
