Hampshire Academy side win Southern Premier Cricket League

Hampshire Academy’s 1st XI have won the ECB’s Southern Premier Cricket League, closing off the season with a win over South Wilts CC on 31 August.

The league campaign began all the way back in May when Hampshire defeated Havant CC by 212 runs. Bashley CC were this season’s runners up and biggest threat in the competition, but Hampshire’s home victory against them, coupled with a draw away from home, were a huge step to securing the title.

Along with the team’s success, there were a number of individual accolades for Hampshire players, with Finn Gordon topping the batting stats for the entire league, ending the campaign with 651 runs. Joseph Eckland achieved the highest score in one game when he struck 141 runs against Havant CC.

Zack Basey was the second highest wicket taker league wide, with 34, the most-ever by a Hampshire Academy player. While Ben Mayes (U16) has been called up to the Young Lions tri series that starts on 12 September against Ireland and Scotland.

Charlie Freeston, Head of Player Development at Hampshire Cricket, spoke of his pride in the team: “We are the only county left that still run an academy side in the local league. It is a lot of effort to run but we believe it is a massive point of difference for us. A massive credit to all players and staff involved, it has been a thoroughly impressive season for us.”
